hey everyone,
I just got 6 to 8 ghost shrimp today and 2 of the shrimp was already carrying eggs. Anyways i am planning on breeding them and i need some extra info on what to feed when they are free floating in the water and if there are any predators in my tank. Heres some info about my tank, its a 20g long, full planted, some fuzz algae here and there, lots of detritus, penguin 110 filter with a prefilter, inhabitants are cherry reds, a few amanos around 1 to 2 inches, otocinclus's, a bristlenose pleco, and a few guppy fry that will be moved to a different tank soon. Anyways i am wondering if anything is going to eat the ghost shrimp when the eggs are hatched and after a ghost shrimp hatches about how long will she have another batch of eggs and how long does it take for a batch to be hatched once you see eggs? Also what kind of food should i feed the shrimp when they are in the free floating stage? will liquifry work or is something smaller needed? and do ghost shrimp grow quick? any extra info is greatly appreciated, thanks

i had one pregnant ghost shrimp that laid her eggs after about 2 weeks i got her. The babies are really really tiny, smaller than cherries. i found them floating around because they were still larves. Soon they disappeared... =/ because i didn't have food for them
i hope you have a sponge over that filter because the babies will be sucked in for sure. the guppy fries might be able to put them in their mouths because they're really small. we don't wana take chances now do we?

ok thanks a lot for the reply, i was starting to worry about not being able to feed them the right food. Tommorow i am probably gonna be spending most of the day trying to catch all the remaining fish in the tank and moving them to my other tank. Other then the guppy fry do you think anything else i listed will eat the shrimp when they are in the floating around stage? Also on my filter inlet i have a filter floss thing wrapped around it, do you think it is too porous that the shrimp will get through? (its the polyester pad things that look like what you would put into blankets, i got it from petsmart for like 2 bucks and i think it was made by HBH). Two more question, do i have to keep feeding them food like i would for guppy fry throughout the day (3 to 6 times) or would i just feed them 2 times a day, one time at night and one time in the morning? And would i be able to tell if they already developed to the next stage or do you think it'll be more safe to feed the crushed up flake food for like 5 days then stop or will i be able to see some tiny ghost shrimp running around on the bottom? thanks for the reply

the pleco and oto wouldn't be able to chase those tiny shrimps with their down sided mouths. any correction is welcome though. the shrimps won't get sucked through the pad, if anything the shrimps can make a living inside the filter heh, or u can check with a flashlight. Keep feeding them till they reach the shrimp stage. 3 times a day should help the growth alot. this is from my experience maybe someone wants to butt in

i usually throw the food in one place and all the shrimps all gather to eat them. However, there were some shrimps on the other side that don't come over. Maybe you can feed it on one spot and sprinkle a little on the other side. Feed it where you're most likely to see them. Its interesting to watch them eat, and plus it promotes breeding.
