Supershrimp moss/algae ball

Post by Jocy »

I bought one of the supershrimp moss/algae balls and it arrived today.
I tested the salinity of the water it came with, and it tested at above 1.02 (measured with a refractometer that I had calibrated with distilled water first)

I keep my shrimp at 1.013, does the moss ball require a higher salinity? I thought it was meant to be kept with the shrimp? Why is the water salinity it came with so high? Should I be drip acclimating the ball?

Supershrimp tanks can vary in salinity and there is no set salinity level that they absolutely have to be at. We gave a range in our articles here that works for us and we found to be optimal. That doesn't mean that things like evaporation won't affect those levels. You probably received a mossball from a tank where to water evaporated a lot and hasn't been replenished with freshwater yet. That's why the salinity is higher. The same tank has shrimp (see video on product page), so yes, obviously the mossballs are meant to be with shrimp. Why else would we claim that they are for Supershrimp tanks? Both shrimp and plants sold here thrive at a wide range of salinities. You're just going to stress yourself out for no reason if you constantly measure the salinity to get it "right." We only measure salinity when there is a significant drop in water levels due to evaporation and we need to fill back up with freshwater. We only due that maybe once or twice a year. Even that (measuring salinity) is not necessary really in customer tanks since we remove water from our tanks when we ship animals and plants and customers only lose water due to evaporation. Salt doesn't evaporate, so no need to measure. Just fill up to the level you started with and you're done.

No need for drip acclimation...just throw the mossball in your shrimp tank and call it a day.
