Japanese Marimo Ball? Food?

Post by cro117 »

hi, i ordered a japanese marimo ball on aquabids. it has not yet come but i had some questions. when i purchesed it i was told that it was an algae. will this make a good food source for chrrys, tigers, and red fronts? if so how fast will they comsume it, should i let it grow a bit before introducing the shrimp?

I've never seen my amanos eating my marimo balls, although they do seem to enjoy preening it, removing detritus from it, etc. Mine are both in tanks with amanos, and still intact after more than 6 months.

Is Aquabid back up?

It is algae.

It will be a good food source, but not in the way you are thinking. It is likely that the algae is to hard for your shrimp to eat. However, they will relish the microbes that live in and on the ball.

ditto. amanos and other shrimp don't eat any algae from marimo balls. it's a taste that isn't to their liking. i have one in my tank and the only thing that gets removed from the ball itself is any fish food that the fish missed.

Although I don't own a Marimo Ball, I bet you that THIS shrimp will most likely eat the algae on a marimo ball. There has not been a single type of hair or string algae that these guys have not eaten in my tanks so far, even the very tough types, which you can barely tear apart with your fingers. These guys even eat Java Moss, which even many specialized plant eaters leave alone.

Marimo balls are fun, and the algae shrimp will pick at it, but certainly not eat the balls themselves. I have 1 in my 10g and the shrimp like picking particles off of it but it's growing and not shrinking!

Mine leave the marimo ball alone, but occasionally they do sit on top of it.
