Malaya Larvae

Well today one of the pet stores finally had enough healthy ghost shrimp that I purchased 6. Of course when I got home only 5 ended up in the tank. One of them flipped somewhere.

Never found it. To make matters worse, one of them was already berried, I'm thinking that was the one that flipped, because none of them are berried now. Any way, now I'm going to see if I can raise these things. Raise is of course the key word.

Good news in the Malaya Tanks as well....Both the 20 and 10 gallon have new young. The 20 long is the newest of the two tanks and the first young are showing up...The other (10) gallon is still producing as well. Soon I think I will have two happy colonies of these rare shrimp and I feel like perhaps I am getting the hang of this shrimp stuff....

Thats good to hear!(read) One of my ghost shrimp is in berry, I've reduced aeration to one bubble/second. Did you have to do that with malaya's?

I have one air driven sponge filter in the 10 gallon tank and it was running steadily all the time. There is a slight current in the tank not excess by any means.

Update....

I now have a second breeding colony of Malaya established in a 20 long and all is still going well with these shrimp. 6 are berried as I write this and two new batches of young are in the tank as well.

Have you mention how many babies on average hatch from a clutch? Thanks for the update and pictures

Hi Richard,

The young ones in their first berry can have from 10 to 30 or so, but after reaching maturity they carry many more and I would estimate 50 or better on average. At least this is what I am seeing in my tanks.

Good job! This is a good "insurance policy" in case something goes wrong with the first tank.

Thank you Mustafa,

I feel that is a real nice complement to my work, but really my success is due to following yours and others advise here at this forum. Good insurance will be when these are again available to share with others here to keep them going in the hobby. Since getting into shrimp about a year ago I have gathered some pretty cool species, but believe it or not the Malaya is still right up there with the Blue Tiger on my favorites list.

That shrimp bug bite is sure hard to cure

There is no cure.

It may lie dormant, but it never goes away. As for favorites, one of my most favorite shrimp is also one that's mostly see-through...the Sri Lanka dwarf shrimp. Too bad it seems to be disappearing from the hobby even in Germany as people chase the various CRS grades and the new sulawesi shrimp. Same with the Malaya shrimp by the way...

Malaya Update,

My 20 long now has a successful and breeding colony so now I have moved the original shrimp and a bunch of their young from their 10 gallon home into a 65 gallon tank that has been cycling and maturing for a couple months. The first starting 10 gallon now sits empty and the Malayas are happily picking about in their new much larger home. This is the final move now and soon will have a thriving colony in the 65 as well as the 20 gallon.... I hope. There are 6 berried females in there now so it will not be long until young will be in the new tank.

Still my favorite shrimp by far...
