Gettin' Some Snowball Shrimp!!

Great not only do we get to enjoy keeping these great shrimp but we also get to learn latin while we are at it. "Carpe diem" translated means "seize the day", anyone know the the latin word for shrimp?

Anyway, when are your snowball shrimp arriving? I just know you will be happy with them

!

I tried to look it up, but either that translater didn't have it, or there isn't a Latin word for shrimp. Maybe they called it something else? Oh, and I gave the translater a "test" by typing in "horse" and got "equus" as the answer.

The shrimp are supposed to be sent out Saturday, which means I'll get the Monday or Tuesday.

WHICH means that I need to finish the darn tank!

Also if you want to add security to your new set up you should use badflash's tip of adding bacteria from an established sponge to the new tank. If you did this already then enjoy the new shrimp

I just wanted to repeat this method because it has worked so well for me with my last couple of tanks, I have had no troubles or losses with this cycling method

I use the same cycling method when I set up a new tank, and I have the same results. I also have some Bio-spira in the refrigerator.

I don't know if you got the snowball shrimp today but I didn't get some moss I ordered. I think it is because Veteran's Day was Saturday, let's hope they come in tomorrow then. Let us know how they do

If you and I are getting stuff from the same guy, then he had PMed me (and I think on another forum) he had posted that he did NOT send out his shipments because Saturday was Veteran's day, and the Post Office was closed, and that he would be sending out shipments today (Tuesday). Soooooo...HOPEFULLY, I and you will be getting our stuff Thursday. I'm okay with that, because I have been struggling to find time to set up that 10 gallon.

So, the update on the 10 gallon snowball shrimp:
I finally have it 80% done. I have several pieces of small driftwood in the tank with Jave fern tied to them. I also found an Easter Island head/Tiki head to put in the tank.

The substrate is Eco-Complete. I came up broke (in my fish funds), so I am getting a filter Wednesday (tomorrow). When I bring it home, I'll just put in some filter media from another tank.

"Caris" is the Latin for shrimp. Hence Caridina ("little shrimp") and our bizarre Cambrian friend Anomalocaris ("Anomalous shrimp").

Ooops - "caris" is Greek for shrimp. I , too am unable to locate a Latin trans. I'm sure there's one out there...

if i understand well the species page snowwball can be kept safely with green shrimp rigth ?

They both do best in hard and basic water. I find there personalities/behavior to be dofferemt though. Snowballs are more like red cherry shrimp in behavior while the green shrimp are more shy and hide until feeding time. Maybe this will change with time but that is what I have observed.

Green shrimp and snowball shrimp will not hybridize. However, I think RCS and snowball shrimp will. Here is a exerpt from the shrimp varieties section:

Due to the fact that it is a Neocaridina species, it will readily hybridize with the Red Cherry shrimp and other Neocaridina species. Hence, Neocaridina species should be kept apart to prevent hybridization.
