Algae started spotting the glass in the 20 gallon. I put in about 25 shrimp from another tank. Interestingly, they have been congregating on just a few rocks, rather than roaming the tank as they do in other aquaria. I’m sure it’s temporary…just interesting to note.

Re: 5th Opae Ula Aquarium—finally cycled!
Will do! I recently added a few Malaysian Trumpet Snails, thinking the others had died off, only to see a pretty large one that has to have been there for a long time. Also, I think I had underestimated the number of shrimp in there

Larval opae ula macro shot in side view
It can be hard to get a decent shot of a larval opae ula using just my phone, but this one isn’t too bad. This was taken just a day or two before this cohort of larvae began to molt into post-larval juveniles.

Opae ula larvae reacting to light
The other day I was catching some Supershrimp, and removing some excess algae from the tank (not Mustafa’s macroalgae). There were quite a few floating larvae in the tank, so filmed them following the light from one side of the tank to the other.

Re: Improving shrimp color
I found a study done on coloration in long-term captive populations of Halocaridina rubra. The study indicated that while astaxanthin is the carotenoid responsible for the red color in the species, 14 days of supplementation did not appear to make a difference in the coloration. . The study ...

Re: Cycling my largest Opae ula aquarium ever
you have alot of tanks. Are there reason behind?
I do have a lot of tanks… I guess I have a lot of reasons, too 🤣
One is positive redundancy. If something were to happen to one of the tanks, I’d still have others.
Another is that one of the tanks is in my office at work to help me de-stress.

Lovely tank!
You mentioned it had been 6 years since you had cleaned up poop. How long have you had the tank?

Cycling my largest Opae ula aquarium ever
I have been keeping Opae ula for a little over 20 years. I have a 2 gallon, a 3 gallon, 5.5 gallon, and a 10 gallon dedicated to these shrimp. I have recently set up another 2 gallon and now a 20 gallon. Here is a shot of part of the 20 gallon tank. It’s got several weeks to go before it’s ready for ...

Re: Opae Ula life expectancy
I started keeping Opae ula back in 2004…there’s no way to distinguish the originals, as they have produced many hundreds of offspring. It’s still mind-blowing to think that some of the shrimp I have could be the originals…and that could still be true a decade from now!

I love the look of that tank! I would love to grow some Stuchenia and/or Ruppia in some of my Opae ula aquaria someday.

It is fun to see so much variety in an obviously successful, yet diminutive, setup.

I hope you do decide to isolate the yellows…they are beautiful, and it would be great to have them established in n the hobby someday!
