What is the long appendage at the head of the shrimp? It looks similar to an insect's proboscis, but I never heard of a liquid-sucking shrimp...

My understanding was that using sea salt, whether natural or synthetic, increased the hatch rate compared to table or rock salt. It stands to reason that once they hatch they are tolerant of different levels of salinity. The ones that live in seasonal pools would be subjected to relatively rapidly c...

Now THAT'S an odd-looking shrimp. Is that an egg sack? I'd like to see a pic of one in a tank.

Very interesting and informative, thanks for taking the time to write that article. Can it be concluded that if multiple generations of cherry shrimp don't produce any odd-colored offspring they are actually a pure strain? Are there any other species that naturally produce red-colored individuals, o...

I'm surprised they haven't been restricted already, considering the potential problems if/when one gets loose somewhere. On the other hand, if they don't find a suitable natural environment, their potential is limited in the long run. A species that essentially clones a single individual is at an ev...

She was all of a sudden camera shy last night when I tried to get pics.
I find it helpful to set the tripod/camera close to the tank, and leave it there so the critter/s become accustomed to it. Then it's just a matter of waiting for the right opportunity...

I was wondering what other types of leaves have been successful in shrimp tanks.
I collect dead water lily leaves from the backyard pond. The shrimp (and snails) will completely devour a 4-5" leaf in about 24 hours, much faster than oak leaves.

How clean is the substrate? Part of the problem could be a buildup of debris polluting the bottom "layer" of the tank, where the crayfish can't escape the nasty effects of decaying organics. I recently lost the orange dwarfs in my 10 gallon cherry shrimp tank. When I stirred the gravel bed...

Epsom salt, crushed coral, or limestone would be be good for raising the hardness of the water. Sea salt isn't a good idea for FW species.

I like the color. I'm surprised that you only have a few after 3 years though. I would have thought there would be more dark-colored offspring produced.

Awesome pic, how's the breeding coming along? I'm hoping it won't be too many more years before the diminutus are available to some more of us invert lovers.
