Your question made me think of one too, regarding egg color. I've seen several different colors of eggs among both cherry shrimp and N. zhangjiajiensis females. Do different-colored saddles produce eggs the same color, or is the color of the saddle and/or the eggs determined by stage of development?...

RCS are probably the easiest shrimp to maintain and breed. CRS and tiger shrimp are much more particular regarding water conditions, as well as being more expensive.

If I remember correctly, that species grows to about pea-size. It's a shame they don't grow as large as olive nerites.

The shrimp will regrow the eyes if it lives through another molt or two. Otherwise, there isn't much to be done aside from keeping the water quality as good as possible.

You should have trained those shrimp better. After all the time and energy you've spent raising them, they should have gone ahead and had your new place ready for you when you arrived. ;-)
Invert's are such ungrateful little critters...

Very few things will eat that algae, and shrimp aren't on the list.

I just received a good-size chunk of driftwood with several java ferns attached. Obviously, it has spent some time in an aquarium already, and the shrimp had a ball cleaning it thoroughly. The dwarf cray's seem to like it as well, I've seen several climbing around on the new addition to their world....

There is also nylon screen available for window/door screens. It would be non-toxic, and have a very fine mesh. Metal screen is usually made of aluminum, I don't know whether that would be a problem.
There are also plastic meshes available in craft stores in various sizes.

Hmm, more likely the ammonia, a sudden spike hits harder than a gradual buildup of nitrates. Usually 40 ppm is an indication of neglected water changes, not something I'd expect to see so soon after a 50% partial. Have you checked the fresh water for ammonia and/or nitrates before adding it to the t...

Ouch :!: Sounds like a bad case of neglecting water changes. Even working 6 days/week I make myself keep up with them, a necessary evil of aquarium keeping.

Reverse Osmosis, basically a filtering system that produces very pure water. If the setup also has an ion-exchange resin at the end, it will produce almost 100% pure water. If you can't buy R/O water locally, you can get a complete home system for around $100. A google search will give you more deta...

With nitrogen and phosphates near 0 I doubt you have to worry too much about an algae outbreak. Besides, the shrimp would probably eat the stuff if it did grow...

Very nice pics, and congrats on the berried female. 8)
I only count 6 eggs in the pic. Are there a few more that aren't visible, or is that all she's produced?

How about a tank divider for the pregnant shrimp? She wouldn't need a large space.

Oops, I thought that shrimp that produced larvae rather than miniature adults all required brackish water for the larvae. (Trying to remove foot from mouth... )
