Just run the standard tests and anticipate the ~2 months I estimate the full transition to brackish conditions will take. Is it necessary to wait that long before stocking the shrimp, or will the bacteria already present support the bioload through the transition period? I was figuring on using MTS...

Live rock for H. rubra

I've been considering starting a small colony of H. rubra, and was wondering whether a chunk of live rock from a SW setup would work as a biological filter. Would the bacteria survive a decrease in salinity, down to brackish levels, or would it be better to establish a setup using MTS first?

Your ropefish would tear it apart very quickly. I once saw one at an lfs finishing off a "blue lobster" that was quite a bit larger than I would have expected it to tackle. (Apparently the owner of the lfs didn't think it was big enough either, but the ropefish had other ideas...) Crayfish...

I'd imagine they're just diffferent color morphs of a single species. After all, cherry and snowball shrimp were selectively bred from variable-colored stock.

Never used tubs for shrimp, just for temp containers for water lilies and fish when I drain the pond for cleaning. Some folks use larger rubbermaid tubs for growing out fish though. Nothing wrong with the idea, I just prefer better visibility.

No worries, the fry will almost certainly be eating micro-crittters living among the moss for the first few weeks. I had a couple of rainbow fish eggs arrive on some plants, the fry grew up with the shrimp w/out any problems. I moved them out of the tank when they were large enough to join the schoo...

BTW- they do just fine with Rabbit food, and they like it.
Rabbit food as in compressed veggie pellets? I may have to try those out on the shrimp and dwarf crays as well. My wife has a pet dwarf rabbit, so there's plenty of pellets handy...

Even if the spicules did wear down the mouth parts of the shrimp feeding on them, they would be replaced with the next molt. In any case, it's unlikely the shrimp would spend enough time gnawing on the sponges to be damaged. Then there's the recently discovered shrimp species that spends its whole l...

I suspect they're random species collected along with ghost shrimp, probably from different sources. After enough strays accumulate from the shrimp shipments, the distributor probably rounds them up and unloads them.

You'd have a better chance of getting viable seed stock from a SW setup. I'm not sure how much difference there is between brackish and SW bacteria, but I do know FW bacteria won't work.

Aside from water quality, I have found they do better at lower temps (~22 C). Mine are in a 30 long with hundreds of shrimp and snails. The snails are great for cleanup and algae control, but the shrimp move and breed much faster, quite a lot of competition for food for the little ones. If I were st...

I was getting a bit discouraged myself when I spotted a dead crayfish last night. :( It was a smaller one, no apparent injuries to be seen. I got out the bucket and siphon hose to do a partial tonight, thinking perhaps the shrimp population increase is making more frequent water changes necessary. I...
