The stained glass would be fine, but there's more to consider when deciding on an enclosure for them:
For size, I recommend 2 gallons at a minimum. This provides plenty of room for decorations, shrimp population growth, and allows for a fair amount of error in terms of water quality because a larger ...

Re: Newbie water questions
The water is filtered and processed to the point that it's overkill- that'll work just fine. I used plain, $1 distilled water from my local grocery store. For acclimating, just dumping all the water into the tank will work, I believe it adds some nutrients and algae spores to "kick off" the tank as ...

Their digestive tract runs through their back, the color indicates that they have eaten algae

Re: Calcium rocks
The rocks never need to be replaced, they very slowly dissolve to an unnoticeable degree as they buffer the water. If more water were added/replaced, the rocks would react and regulate the pH

Re: OK to skim surface?
I would go for it, the only downside is stressing them out for a day or so, but they'll be fine. The surface film is not much of a food source for them, as the majority of biofilm is gathered from the glass and decorations. The surface film also recovers over time and never truly disappears, much to ...

It definitely resembles bacteria, perhaps more clarification on parameters, especially salinity, may help to determine a cause.

That amount of space would work, I'm sure it would make no difference if it were halved, or even less than that. This species is adapted well to low-oxygen environments, so there's no need to worry (if they can survive in a sealed glass enclosure, there's no danger of having too little space for gas ...

I have read that post, I didn't realize it was yours

Re: Shrimp, Snails and Dwarf hermit crabs coexisting well
Always great to see the boundaries expanded for the hobby! I myself managed to achieve "the impossible"- I acclimated freshwater algae to grow in my setup, it's done great and thrived for over a year (unlike any mario moss balls!)

Re: Shrimp, Snails and Dwarf hermit crabs coexisting well
From what I've read, the major concern with dwarf hermit crab and opae ula cohabitation is the requirements for the crab: assuming your snail population can support them, that would be a great loophole around having to add supplemental food. The addition of extra food for the crabs, which require ...

The Opae Oasis: My Tank
Greetings, I'm a long time reader and have learned much on the forum over the course of 3-4 years. I first learned about Opae Ula when I was around 15 years old and wanted them ever since. In May of 2021, I had everything prepared: A 2.5 gallon tank, LED light (from a freshwater aquarium kit ...
