Re: Improving shrimp color

The goal is to have a self sustaining ecosystem. You start feeding other elements that are not typical you're throwing other variables into the equation. You should have no filtration. Keep it simple and be happy with the colors one has. It will not change.

Best to never clean the poop up. It's there to provide nutrients to the algae and also create biofilm.

Re: Improving shrimp color

Don't add any additional foods like that. These are Opae Ula not like your typical FW shrimp. Adding stuff like this will just pollute your water over time. Your shrimp are the color they are. Just enjoy the.

Re: Algae is dying - do I need to buy more?

Actually you're wrong. There's not than enough light. This chaeto does not like high light. It does great under low level LED's. It's not getting enough nutrients. The chaeto has done it's job which is to remove ammonia, nitrates and phosphates.

Re: Do I need to worry about this algae or remove it?

While these plants are listed for brackish water conditions they cannot flourish or thrive in the Opae Ula salinity of 1.010+. As you can see here on the list none of these will work. It's always good to check. This is why you usually never see any plants in Opae Ula tanks other than macroalgae ...

Re: Sustainability concerns in ecosphere

Trumpet snails don't require & that's why they're best suited for Opae Ula environments. There's just not enough in there to sustain a nerite snail. Their requirements are much more plus you have to consider making sure there's enough to sustain the shrimp. This doesn't mean feed more unless you're ...

Re: Sustainability concerns in ecosphere

It is fine the way it is. No feeding. All you'll have to do is top off the water with RO freshwater. You don't have to do anything else. Don't add any live spirulina. You can feed freeze dried spirulina but very little and that should be at the beginning of it. A horned nerite will not work in a ...

Re: Help please! Larvae getting trapped in the brown algae

You should not be using an active substrate, Fort starters that's going to drop your PH a lot lower that what's suggested for Opae Ula. Break it down and start all over.

Re: Help please! Larvae getting trapped in the brown algae

For starters you should not have that piece of driftwood in there. I would remove it. It's great for FW shrimp tanks but not Opae ULa. Also what type of substrate is that? Looks like an active one.

Re: Is spring water safe for opae ula?

The issues with spring water is it will contain minerals which includes sodium, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. What you get from using a marine salt mix is all you need. Stick with distilled or RO.

Shells won't help. Maybe keep your ph up. What other forms of calcium do you have?

Re: New addition - Spike Tail Malaysian Trumpet snails

Just a heads up. These snails need a lot of calcium in the water in order to retain theirs shells. Lack of calcium in water will cause their shells to wear away.
